What is Kumkumadi Tailam?

Though created thousands of years ago in the Indian subcontinent, Kumkumadi Tailam Face Serum is one of the most popular Ayurvedic skincare concoctions in the present time. The name of this face serum or face oil comes from certain Sanskrit words. “Kumkum” stands for “saffron”, “Adi” stands for “etc”, and “Tailam” stands for “oil”. Therefore, Kumkumadi Tailam translates to “oil made up of saffron and other herbs”. Indeed, this name suits the ancient face serum the best as saffron is its key ingredient, and over 22 herbs and other natural elements are concocted in appropriate proportions to create this natural face oil.

Much like other Ayurvedic recipes and treatments for skincare, the Kumkumadi face serum is created with natural ingredients. Its special formulation comes from an ancient Ayurvedic book, Charak Samita. Today, it is effectively used as a face serum to treat and prevent multiple skin conditions. The enriching ingredients of herbs, flowers, plant extracts, etc. make this face serum stand out in its advantages. Some common benefits of the face oil include a more even skin tone, firmer skin, reversing sun damage, and slow aging. It is one of the best natural skincare product USA markets have today and it is gaining popularity due its potent ingredients and formulation.

A trip down memory lane: where did Kumkumadi Tailam come from?

To truly understand the magic of Kumkumadi Tailam one must contextualize its roots and its legends. As mentioned before, Kumkumadi Tailam comes from the ancient healing system of “Ayurveda”. To truly appreciate its reputation as an elixir, you must understand the background of Ayurveda as well.

Ayurveda is not just a medicinal system that came from “doctors” in the past. Instead, it is said to have a spiritual root. Kumkumadi oil comes from “Vedic” culture, which consists of several writings and texts about philosophy, ideal lifestyles, mythology about Gods, etc. Much of the knowledge in the Vedas are said to have been passed down orally, from Gods to sages, and from sages to their students. Much of the knowledge, therefore, is not available in writing. Among these, “Charak Samhita” and “Sushruta Samhita” are two ancient texts that concern Ayurvedic knowledge and are accessible to us. Both of these texts are written in Sanskrit. They are known to be the foundation of Ayurvedic knowledge.

Where does Kumkumadi Tailam come from?

You’ll be fascinated to know that the recipe for this face serum (which is used even today) is written in this ancient text! The Kumkumadi Tailam is thought to have been utilized first for its medicinal benefits. Kumkumadi oil was used to heal skin infections, acne scars, dark circles, and dull skin since it contained herbs like saffron, turmeric, blue lotus extract, sandalwood, and licorice root. Therefore, this ancient face serum can now be involved in a variety of skin treatments due to its restorative and antibacterial properties.

Kumkuma (Saffron)

Kumkuma (Saffron)

Also known as Kesar in Hindi, Saffron is a spice that looks like little red threads after it is extracted from the purple saffron flower. In fact, it is the world’s most expensive spice! For this reason, we could say that saffron doesn’t just give Kumkumadi Tailam its beautiful name, but it is also the ingredient that makes this concoction luxurious and special. It is said that Kumkumadi Tailam Face Serum was used by princesses and queens in medieval India.

How does saffron help your skin? In countless ways! It is well known for having a lot of antioxidants. It is used to cure acne, mend wounds, and treat hyperpigmentation. The orangish color it has is renowned for giving skin a warm, radiant complexion that turns heads.

Chandana (Sandalwood)

Sandalwood is known for its fragrance all over the world. In India, it is often used in organic soaps thanks to its beautiful scents. It is also used in temples to worship Gods. In fact, numerous religions, including Hinduism, Islam, Zoroastrianism, and many East Asian traditions, value sandalwood’s wood and oil. It's utilized as incense, rosary beads, a decorative paste for cleaning, and in holy rituals.

Sandalwood has healing, soothing, brightening and cleansing properties. While saffron is a spice that has some warming properties, sandalwood is known for its skin-calming and skin-brightening properties. This means that it reduces inflammation and heals one’s skin from infections or irritations. It is also known to make one’s skin smooth and fragrant.

Manjistha (Indian Madder)

The scientific name of Manjistha is Rubia cordifolia L. It is extracted by using the dried roots of the manjistha plant. In Hindi, it is also known as Manjitha or Manjit, while in English, it is called Indian Madder.

In Ayurveda, Manjistha is largely known for its blood purification properties. In other words, this herb is an anti-oxidant with remarkable cleansing properties. Some claim it also has anti-diabetic and anti-stress properties.

Thus, it is used to treat inflammatory conditions such as ulcers and external infections. It is also known to be great at fighting acne-causing bacteria, serving as a blessing for acne-prone skin.

Daruharidra (Tree Turmeric)

The Tree Turmeric is frequently referred to as a "golden spice" in India. This is not surprising as it is widely used in most regions of the country in daily practices such as cooking, Ayurveda, beauty products, and rituals.

Daruharidra is packed with curcumin, an active ingredient that contributes significantly to a wide range of amazing benefits for your skin and appearance. Thanks to its antibacterial properties, it reduces scarring and speeds up wound healing. Its antioxidant properties further encourage the release of phytochemicals that shield skin cells from free radical damage and lessen the appearance of wrinkles, dark spots, and other early indications of aging..

Yashtimadhu (Licorice)

root has typically been utilized to cure a variety of conditions. It provides numerous advantages for the skin, including anti-inflammatory and skin-lightening characteristics. This herbal extract may be able to help you if you suffer from discoloration, redness, psoriasis, or dermatitis.

Glycyrrhizin, an extremely strong antioxidant, is present in the licorice root extract. The antioxidants shield your skin from UV radiation and free radical damage when applied topically. As a result, premature aging is avoided.

How to Make Kumkumadi Tailam at Home?

It is recommended that you try Kumkumadi Tailam made by a trusted Ayurvedic brand first before trying to concoct it on your own. However, if your question is whether or not you can make Kumkumadi Tailam Face Oil on your own, the answer is yes! A proper procedure and appropriate proportions are necessary to make sure the face serum you create is effective.

There are several parts to the recipe for making Kumkumadi Tailam. First, the kwath or “concoction” is made. Next, the Kalka, or a smooth paste of a few herbs is made. The Kwath and Kalka are then added to a sesame oil or coconut oil base. Finally, a paste of saffron is added to the resulting blend. After adding the saffron, your Kumkumadi Tailam is ready.

To get started, the Kwath has to be prepared first. You will have to take a look at all the key ingredients added to the face serum or face oil. Collect all herbs on the list except for Lac, Pattanga, Mulethi, Manjistha, Mahua, and Kumkum (saffron). Make sure all of these herbs are taken in the same quantity. For example, if you use 40 grams of Tree turmeric, you use 40 grams of sandalwood, vetiver, etc. as well. Add these herbs to sufficient water. For 40 grams, you may approximately need 9 liters of water.

After soaking for about 5 to 8 hours, bring all of these components to a boil. Continue boiling until only 1/4th of the original quantity of the water you added to the herbs. After this water cools down, you can filter out the residual herbs. This remaining water is now your Kwath.

To create the Kalka, take 1/4th of the quantity of herbs you took in the Kwath. For example, if your Kwath herbs were taken 40 grams each, your Kalka herbs will be taken 10 grams each. The herbs included in the Kalka include Lac, Pattanga, Mulethi, Majistha, and Mahua. Mix these herbs with water to create a smooth paste. This paste is now your Kalka.

Now, the Kalka and Kwatha are mixed into sesame oil or coconut oil. Whatever you use, make sure to use an organic composition of the oils. Bring this mixture to boil until the herbs completely dissolve into the oil and only the oil remains.

Finally, make a separate paste of saffron and mix it with the face oil you have prepared. There you go! Your very own bottle of Kumkumadi Tailam has been created.

The Bottom Line

The advancement of technology has given us many benefits and advantages but they aren’t always the best choice for our wellbeing. Using hard chemicals on your skin and body may therefore not be completely safe. Thus, Ayurveda acts as a good solution to your skincare needs in response to the modern radiation and stress we face daily.
